Configuration file Reference

A .cfg file contains configuration settings for a program. The content is in most cases plain text with keys and values. There is no single standard structure; each program defines its own. Games, tools, and services on all platforms use the extension. A text editor can show and change the file.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
