SQL script Reference

A .sql file contains statements in SQL, the Structured Query Language. The plain-text file creates tables, changes data, or defines procedures for a database. Database tools run the script against a server. Software projects use .sql files for schema setup and migrations. Each database product accepts a slightly different SQL dialect.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
