AVI video Reference

An .avi file contains video and audio in the Audio Video Interleave container. The format uses the RIFF structure, like .wav. Many different codecs can fill the container. Microsoft introduced the format in 1992, and most players still read it. Newer containers such as MP4 and Matroska replaced it for most uses.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
