Compiled HTML Help Reference

A .chm file contains Compiled HTML Help. The container holds HTML topic pages, images, an index, and a table of contents in compressed form. The Windows help viewer, hh.exe, shows the file. Software manuals and older Microsoft documentation ship in this format. One .chm file replaces a full folder of help pages.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
