Directory database Reference

A .dit file is a directory database on Windows. The known file is ntds.dit, the database of Active Directory. It stores the directory information tree with all objects and attributes in an ESE database. Domain controllers hold the file in the NTDS directory. Windows ships a template ntds.dit for the promotion of a new domain controller.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
