TIFF image Reference

A .tif file contains a raster image in the TIFF format, the Tagged Image File Format. The format supports lossless storage, many color depths, and several pages in one file. Scanners, fax systems, and print production use it heavily. Windows Fax and Scan saves scanned pages as .tif. The extension .tiff means the same format.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
