Input method dictionary
An .imd file contains dictionary data for a Microsoft input method editor. Input method editors convert keystrokes into East Asian characters and use such dictionaries for the conversion. The files are binary, for example the Chinese file pintlgcf.imd. Windows keeps input method data in its InputMethod and IME directories. Each language version ships its own dictionary set.
A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
