Add-in registration file

An .addin file registers an add-in with a host application. The file is XML and names the assembly, the class, and the load behavior of the extension. Older Visual Studio versions and other .NET hosts scan known directories for .addin files. The host loads the add-in when it starts. The add-in code itself stays in a separate assembly.

A file extension is only a part of the file name. It does not give a guarantee about the format or the content of a file. But on Windows, the extension selects the program that opens the file.
